My friend and fellow Tech alumnus Will Welch, who has at this point in his life spent six years in college obtaining two degrees, and has contemplated a Congressional run against House Village Idiot Lynn Westmoreland (seen here unable to count of the Ten Commandments after claiming that he cannot think of a better place for them than in a courthouse), recently linked me to a new website, brijit, which is a compilation of hundred word synopses of the news, as provided by such luminous sources as The Economist (my preferred news source), Nature, and ESPN The Magazine. They don’t pay me to write about this, so clearly I’m doing it because I think it’s a good idea. It’s hard to keep up with everything everywhere, so compiling everything into a short snippet can at least keep you reasonably well informed, and the fact that they have opted out of the wiki format means that what cyberhaxXx1991 thinks about the Obama campaign will be kept out, which is never a bad thing.

At the request of the fine folks at the SomethingAwful forums, I’ve convinced Julia Gray/Novak to write about her work at the LHC this summer. She will be out there until I believe early/mid August working to calibrate the instruments using Z boson decays.
I’ve asked her to post weekly updates on Fridays, and hopefully she’ll be able to contribute regularly. Be on the look-out starting next week or so.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce that I have come up with my first regular feature that may actually stick around for a while. Every week, I’m going to try to write a review on a book relating to physics or math. These are, of course, going to be references, not “pop science” books.
Here’s where all three of my readers kick in. I have signed up as a “vendor” for Amazon.com, so each book listed will be linked to through a special link. If someone is actually going to buy the book, and they buy it through that link, I get a small kickback. Pretty neat, huh? Of course, this won’t affect my reviews, but it would be a nice way to get paid a bit for running this website.
So starting this Friday, look out for my first review.

As a general administrative note, I’ve now enabled people to comment on my posts. Took a bit of searching with WordPress before I could make that work, but I’ll be posting periodic updates as I find new features and such. As it is, feel free to comment on what I’m posting.

My new personal weblog focusing pretty much exclusively on physics, mathematics, and science education in America. Hopefully, there will be fruitful content about every week or so — remarks about my research, posted problems of interest, news article about science and education, the like.
The goal here is to work on not writing about anything else as it is about writing about the subjects at hand. If I stray into ramblings about the world of politics, feel free to slap me down at any time.
Until my next update,
-Stephen
